The West Virginia TU council voted to ban drilling in the Monongahela National Forest– an area with some of the best last remaining brook trout populations in the East. This is the first time a TU council has taken a position on protecting critical habitat in regards to Marcellus Shale.
Protecting the Mon is incredibly important…having the West Virginia council take a stance on illustrates just how special this place is.

As an avid sportsman and fly chunker from the age of 5, I tuned in to the TU program filmed on the Delaware River regarding the Marcellus Shale and related drilling activity. Never in my life have I listened to a broadcast where there were so many incorrect statements being made regarding drilling and underground fracking by so many who clearly knew nothing of the subject. If TU is going to take a position and use programming to make a point, then educate yourselves on the subject and provide accurate information. What I heard was a “Cry of Wolf” just for the sake of speaking out, attempting to use fear of the unknown to drive home a point. Not impressed at all with the approach or the voice of TU on this issue.

Neil,
What leads you to believe that they are crying wolf?
I’m a native of WV, and can tell you that the problems associated with the energy industry’s practices sets us back generations, especially when it comes to the pollution that destroys our water ways. Way to often, people that are dependent on the jobs the energy industry creates can’t see beyond their own self-interest or gains. Why should someone with a 10th education feel that they should be entitled to 60k-80k a year, at the expense of wiping out limited native brook populations or contaminating water tables that effect drink water?
The bottom-line about fracking, is there isn’t enough conclusive data to prove it isn’t a threat. That said, proceed with caution; once the damages is done, it take decades/generations to correct.
