The winter 2012 issue of Trout features the heart-felt essay by William Baltz who recalled an early trout-fishing experience with his older brother who later died from injuries sustained in a mid-air plane collision over Brooklyn, N.Y. on Dec. 16, 1960. William, his brother and the collision were featured last year in a New York Times series that appeared on the 50th anniversary of the crash. You can read that series here.

The story touched me because that was my brother he is talking about.
I was the middle sister. William is an excellent writer and his memories of Steve and how he applied them to fishing brought chills all over my body. What an excellent story to share – I am proud of him!

I recall very well the incident with the two aircraft that occurred fifty-one years ago. Mr. Baltz paints a vivid and affectionate picture of his brother and the horrific loss to his family tying it all into trout fishing. Together he tells a story of beauty, suffering and how fate can ravage.
Thank you publishing this fine piece of journalism.

This was a very well written and moving article by Bill. Thank you for sharing such personal family memories with all of us. It took me back 50 years ago to a different world of riding my bike down bumpy brick streets in Wilmette with your brother to go hang out at your house.

A touching story and one I can relate to as my father was on the same airplane. I was 13 years old at the time and I remember well his brother’s struggle for life after the crash. Mr. Baltz does a beautiful job remembering his brother.
