Although we’ve read about some production controversy, many anglers and TUers are excited to see a movie version of the prolific David James Duncan book The River Why. Duncan is reportedly producing his own version of the movie with A River Runs Through It producer Patrick Markey, while another version starring Zach Gilford, Amber Heard and William Hurt is coming out this year.
And while many anglers have a love-hate relationship with “the movie” that made angling stylish, some are wondering if either version of The River Why movie will have the same cultural impact for fly-fishing. Outside magazine explores this idea in a February article. What do you think?

Sigh. Somewhere, somebody will figure out yet another way to make money from my 50-year hobby of fishing… and flyfishing. I’m sick of hearing about new movies about flyfishing. ARRTI was a good flyfishing movie, not because it was about flyfishing and flyfishermen, because Bob Redford made it.
Traver got it right. Getting out there with Louie and fishing with “pork chops” is a better time than the best movie about flyfishing.

The movie may have brought crowds to some of our streams, but it also brought a shot of funding that can be used for stream conservation. Besides, the fly fishers that the movie brought out will soon disappear except for the new serious fly fishers that will be willing to particpate in conservation efforts of the future. At some point we need to pass the baton to the next serious generation. The crowding of streams has generally occured on the more notable streams and they have been crowded. We can always find less publicized steams or sections of streams if we are willing to take the real trout seeking adventure which is more than jumping off at a bridge and wetting a line.

Great movie and definitely recommend to others to get out and watch it. Not quite River Runs Through It but enjoyable nonetheless!
